Project Description

“Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody” — Jane Jacobs (1961).

The use of augmented reality has increased over the past century e.g. for social media and interior design however, it has yet not been implemented in the aspect of city development.

The research investigates and measures the participants’ engagement within their community as to how they are engaged and whether or not, by becoming co-creators of the city through augmented reality, they feel a stronger connection and engagement.

The previous quote by Jane Jacobs is the foundation of this research in the sense that if augmented reality was implemented in the process of city development, everyone would be able to offer their opinion of an accessible and delightful city in a virtual world and hereby declaring how the city would be able to provide something for the individual.

The research hereby aims to provide an answer to what extent site specific art in augmented reality can suggest a need for cultural development based on the location and the content of the art created on the participants’ own initiative. To gather the data needed various methods are utilized; firstly, the participant uses the application “Express Yourself” and partake in a semi-structured interview on the experience and the content created in the app. Thereafter, the participants’ will submit answers to a questionnaire to examine and determine the extent of engagement they felt while using the app.

The qualitative and quantitative data gathered will seek to provide validity to the research and paint a more in-depth picture of community engagement and cultural development.

By modifying their environment in the augmented reality app “Express Yourself”, the general public will be given the option of offering their view on what an area should and should not offer. Annexed, the participants’ become increasingly engaged within their community, thereby giving developers the opportunity to reach a broader audience when modifying public areas. Hereby, giving the developers’ the opportunity to create cities that provide something for everyone because they are created in collaboration with everybody.

Projektbeskrivelse
